Project Overview: CCTV, Servers, Internet, and P2P Link Solution for Blaxland CBD

Client: Blaxland & Districts Chamber of Commerce

Project Summary

Metwide Communications was contracted to design and install a comprehensive CCTV, networking, and surveillance system for the Blaxland Central Business District to improve crime prevention and security through environmental design. Following a crime prevention audit and recommendations from the NSW Police, we implemented a high-performance surveillance system that covers key crime hotspots, laneways, and areas with limited physical surveillance.

This solution featured the installation of CCTV cameras, network servers, internet connectivity via microwave point-to-point links, and surge protection. The project aimed to provide continuous surveillance, effective incident tracking, and enhanced safety for the local businesses and public spaces.

Scope of Works:

CCTV System Installation:
  • PTZ & Fixed Motorised Cameras based on strategic locations identified by Metwide & NSW Police to cover critical areas such as laneways, carparks, and pedestrian walkways.
  • A Lenovo server was deployed to manage video storage, user access rights, and device management, ensuring that all surveillance footage is centrally managed and stored securely.
  • Hard drive storage was provided to retain footage for at least 30 days, allowing for review of past events in case of incidents.
P2P (Point-to-Point) Microwave Links Installation:
  • Microwave links were deployed to connect CCTV data from multiple buildings to the central server, providing high-speed wireless data transmission across the CBD.
  • Ubiquiti Ethernet Surge Protectors were installed to safeguard the system against potential voltage surges, enhancing system reliability.
Network Infrastructure:
  • All necessary cabling, conduit fittings, and rooftop antenna mounts were installed to ensure a neat and professional setup.
Police Recommendations Implementation:
  • We strategically positioned cameras to cover high-risk areas such as the Blaxland Tavern, public walkways, railway overpasses, and ATM locations.
  • Overlapping camera angles were incorporated to ensure continuous surveillance of critical areas, which helps police track and identify offenders more efficiently.
  • Highly visible signage was installed near the cameras as a deterrent, in line with the police report's suggestion that overt CCTV signage enhances the deterrent effect.
System Configuration, Testing, and Commissioning:
  • Conducted comprehensive testing to verify the functionality of the cameras, including live feed checks, recording/playback quality, and microwave link signal strength.
  • Final commissioning ensured that the system was fully operational and met the crime prevention objectives outlined by the NSW Police.
Training, Handover, and Documentation:
  • Provided full system documentation, including user manuals, network diagrams, and configuration settings.
  • Delivered training sessions to Blaxland CBD staff on system operation, user rights management, and basic troubleshooting.
  • A formal handover was conducted to confirm that the system met all project objectives and client requirements.

Key Outcomes

Enhanced Crime Prevention:
The CCTV system now provides extensive surveillance coverage, particularly in areas prone to criminal activity such as laneways, overpasses, and public spaces. This system serves as both a deterrent and an investigative tool for law enforcement.
Continuous Surveillance:
The overlapping camera angles and high-definition footage allow for continuous monitoring of the entire CBD, ensuring that no area is left unmonitored.
Seamless Data Transmission:
The P2P microwave links enable efficient and secure wireless transmission of data from remote locations to the central server, improving connectivity without the need for extensive cabling.
Centralised Management:
Lenovo server provides centralised control, allowing for easy access to stored footage, user management, and device control from a single platform.
Scalability:
The system is designed to be scalable, allowing for future expansion to cover additional areas within Blaxland CBD as security needs evolve.
